S.T.R.A.W. (strengthening, transforming, restoring, affirming young women) Incorporated ™ Center for Young Women© is a nonprofit nongovernmental community based youth development organization founded in March 2004 by Therena A. Cunningham.
S.T.R.A.W Inc. ™ is a legally incorporated youth development organization which provides a safe, positive and structured mentoring program for adolescent girls, teen girls and young women in the Bahamas.
S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Center for Young Women© is a safe place where teen girls and young women are free from the negative influences within the environment around them. It is within this safe space that girls are introduced to a model that engages them to discover and be themselves; connect and join with others to make the world around them a better place.
Having transitioned over the past ten (10) years from an international award winning dance and drill team comprised of over 35 teen girls to an after/out of school youth development program which has impacted thousands of teen girls throughout New Providence and the Outer Islands, S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Center for Young Women© is well on its way to becoming the premier youth development organization for Bahamian teen girls and young women.
Today, S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Center for Young Women© partners with public junior and senior high schools and serves over 350 female students throughout New Providence and the Family Islands. We provide motivation, encouragement, and reinforcement to help girls make smart choices that deter risky behaviors while giving guidance for positive transformation. During our ten years of community service history, over 1,500 girls have come through our doors. S.T.R.A.W. Inc.™ develops relationships with girls, and their parents, giving support as early as ten years old until womanhood.
S.T.R.A.W. Inc. ™ Center for Young Women© is a nationwide, comprehensive, and all-inclusive program designed for Bahamian youth seeking to strengthen their leadership knowledge, skills and abilities.
